And maybe, maybe, maybe… If you do too much it’s going to lose its effectiveness. When things happen – enjoy them. They’re little gifts. Give him a friend, we forget the trees get lonely too. Every single thing in the world has its own personality – and it is up to you to make friends with the little rascals. We wash our brush with odorless thinner. There it is. Everybody’s different. Trees are different. Let them all be individuals.
Let’s put some happy trees and bushes back in here. Nice little fluffy clouds laying around in the sky being lazy. Nature is so fantastic, enjoy it. Let it make you happy. You can do anything here. So don’t worry about it. Just beat the devil out of it. Be careful. You can always add more – but you can’t take it away. I guess I’m a little weird. I like to talk to trees and animals. That’s okay though; I have more fun than most people.
You have to make these big decisions. This is your world. A fan brush is a fantastic piece of equipment. Use it. Make friends with it. Let that brush dance around there and play. Go out on a limb – that’s where the fruit is. The least little bit can do so much. Paint anything you want on the canvas. Create your own world. You have to make those little noises or it won’t work.
How to paint. That’s easy. What to paint. That’s much harder. From all of us here, I want to wish you happy painting and God bless, my friends. Use what happens naturally, don’t fight it. We have no limits to our world. We’re only limited by our imagination. Let’s have a happy little tree in here. It’s a very cold picture, I may have to go get my coat. You can’t make a mistake. Anything that happens you can learn to use – and make something beautiful out of it. It’s a good way of getting rid of all your anxieties and hostilities. Just a happy little shadow that lives in there. Do an almighty painting with us. We don’t want to set these clouds on fire. You can spend all day playing with mountains.
This present moment is perfect simply due to the fact you’re experiencing it. Put light against light – you have nothing. Put dark against dark – you have nothing. It’s the contrast of light and dark that each give the other one meaning. Don’t kill all your dark areas – you need them to show the light. Don’t be afraid to make these big decisions. Once you start, they sort of just make themselves. If it’s not what you want – stop and change it. Don’t just keep going and expect it will get better. You can’t have light without dark. You can’t know happiness unless you’ve known sorrow. Everyone is going to see things differently – and that’s the way it should be.
In your world you have total and absolute power. Every day I learn. Isn’t that fantastic that you can create an almighty tree that fast? We’ll take a little bit of Van Dyke Brown. Just take out whatever you don’t want. It’ll change your entire perspective. Let your heart take you to wherever you want to be. There we go. There are no mistakes. You can fix anything that happens.
Every highlight needs it’s own personal shadow. Use absolutely no pressure. Just like an angel’s wing. Any little thing can be your friend if you let it be. Absolutely no pressure. You are just a whisper floating across a mountain. There he comes. It’s cold, but it’s beautiful.
Just think about these things in your mind and drop em’ on canvas. You have to allow the paint to break to make it beautiful. You got your heavy coat out yet? It’s getting colder. This is the way you take out your flustrations. Now we’ll take the almighty fan brush. Now we don’t want him to get lonely, so we’ll give him a little friend.
That’s why I paint – because I can create the kind of world I want – and I can make this world as happy as I want it. They say everything looks better with odd numbers of things. But sometimes I put even numbers—just to upset the critics. A little happy sunlight shining through there. It takes dark in order to show light. It all happens automatically. Let your imagination be your guide.
Let’s have a little bit of fun today. Just go out and talk to a tree. Make friends with it. We don’t have to be concerned about it. We just have to let it fall where it will. Just think about these things in your mind – then bring them into your world. This is a fantastic little painting. I get carried away with this brush cleaning. Just use the old one inch brush. No worries. No cares. Just float and wait for the wind to blow you around.
You have to make almighty decisions when you’re the creator. And just raise cain. I thought today we would make a happy little stream that’s just running through the woods here. In your imagination you can go anywhere you want. Now it’s beginning to make a little sense. Once you learn the technique, ohhh! Turn you loose on the world; you become a tiger.
This is unplanned it really just happens. There’s nothing wrong with having a tree as a friend. Let’s put some highlights on these little trees. The sun wouldn’t forget them. Clouds are free they come and go as they please. That’s the way I look when I get home late; black and blue. See there how easy that is. Work on one thing at a time. Don’t get carried away – we have plenty of time. We can fix anything.
Let’s make a happy little mountain now. Clouds are free. They just float around the sky all day and have fun. Let’s make a nice big leafy tree. Nice little clouds playing around in the sky. If you’ve been in Alaska less than a year you’re a Cheechako. Painting should do one thing. It should put happiness in your heart. Maybe there’s a happy little bush that lives right there.
You don’t have to spend all your time thinking about what you’re doing, you just let it happen. Zip. That easy. There is no right or wrong – as long as it makes you happy and doesn’t hurt anyone. No pressure. Just relax and watch it happen. In painting, you have unlimited power. You have the ability to move mountains. The only thing worse than yellow snow is green snow. If what you’re doing doesn’t make you happy – you’re doing the wrong thing. Trees get lonely too, so we’ll give him a little friend.
We need a shadow side and a highlight side. Life is too short to be alone, too precious. Share it with a friend. In this world, everything can be happy. You create the dream – then you bring it into your world. There we go. And maybe a little bush lives there.
Maybe there was an old trapper that lived out here and maybe one day he went to check his beaver traps, and maybe he fell into the river and drowned. Water’s like me. It’s laaazy … Boy, it always looks for the easiest way to do things Fluff it up a little and hypnotize it. This is your world, whatever makes you happy you can put in it. Go crazy. Anytime you learn something your time and energy are not wasted. All those little son of a guns. Let’s give him a friend too. Everybody needs a friend. I want everbody to be happy. That’s what it’s all about.
Anyone can paint. A big strong tree needs big strong roots. You better get your coat out, this is going to be a cold painting. Without washing the brush, I’m gonna go right into some Van Dyke Brown, some Burnt Umber, and a little bit of Sap Green. You can work and carry-on and put lots of little happy things in here. Let your imagination be your guide. I’m a water fanatic. I love water. Have fun with it.
If we’re going to have animals around we all have to be concerned about them and take care of them. Don’t be bashful drop me a line. Use what you see, don’t plan it. It looks so good, I might as well not stop. And right there you got an almighty cloud. I’ll go over the colors one more time that we use: Titanium white, Thalo green, Prussian blue, Van Dyke brown, Alizarin crimson, Sap green, Cad yellow, and Permanent red.
See how easy it is to create a little tree right in your world. So often we avoid running water, and running water is a lot of fun. It is a lot of fun. Let all these things just sort of happen. You want your tree to have some character. Make it special. Everything’s not great in life, but we can still find beauty in it.
We have all at one time or another mixed some mud. Automatically, all of these beautiful, beautiful things will happen. For the lack of a better word I call them hangy downs. Just make a decision and let it go. We’ll lay all these little funky little things in there. Each highlight must have it’s own private shadow. Now then, let’s play.
That’s a crooked tree. We’ll send him to Washington. Let’s put some happy little clouds in our world. We don’t have anything but happy trees here. Trees grow however makes them happy. I’m gonna start with a little Alizarin crimson and a touch of Prussian blue Everyone wants to enjoy the good parts – but you have to build the framework first. We spend so much of our life looking – but never seeing.
You don’t want to kill all your dark areas they are very important. Let’s build some happy little clouds up here. We don’t need any guidelines or formats. All we need to do is just let it flow right out of us. Put it in, leave it alone. Just a little indication. A beautiful little sunset. Look around, look at what we have. Beauty is everywhere, you only have to look to see it. And I know you’re saying, ‘Oh Bob, you’ve done it this time.’ And you may be right.
You can bend rivers. But when I get home, the only thing I have power over is the garbage. It’s beautiful – and we haven’t even done anything to it yet. I guess that would be considered a UFO. A big cotton ball in the sky. We must be quiet, soft and gentle. Very easy to work these to death. It’s amazing what you can do with a little love in your heart. Here we’re limited by the time we have. We’re trying to teach you a technique here and how to use it.
We tell people sometimes: we’re like drug dealers, come into town and get everybody absolutely addicted to painting. It doesn’t take much to get you addicted. If we’re gonna walk though the woods, we need a little path. Let’s have a nice tree right here. But they’re very easily killed. Clouds are delicate. Isn’t that fantastic? This is an example of what you can do with just a few things, a little imagination and a happy dream in your heart. Just let this happen. We just let this flow right out of our minds.
You can create anything that makes you happy. Exercising the imagination, experimenting with talents, being creative; these things, to me, are truly the windows to your soul. Of course he’s a happy little stone, cause we don’t have any other kind. I really believe that if you practice enough you could paint the ‘Mona Lisa’ with a two-inch brush. A thin paint will stick to a thick paint. Tree trunks grow however makes them happy. Put your feelings into it, your heart, it’s your world.
See there, told you that would be easy. Work that paint. You have freedom here. The only guide is your heart. We’ll paint one happy little tree right here. We’ll play with clouds today. We have a fantastic little sky!
You gotta think like a tree. The very fact that you’re aware of suffering is enough reason to be overjoyed that you’re alive and can experience it. That’s crazy. Isn’t it great to do something you can’t fail at? God gave you this gift of imagination. Use it. You can get away with a lot.
All you have to learn here is how to have fun. We start with a vision in our heart, and we put it on canvas. The secret to doing anything is believing that you can do it. Anything that you believe you can do strong enough, you can do. Anything. As long as you believe. Working it up and down, back and forth. A fan brush can be your best friend. We can always carry this a step further. There’s really no end to this.
This is truly an almighty mountain. Maybe, just to play a little, we’ll put a little tree here. You are only limited by your imagination. Just pretend you are a whisper floating across a mountain.
